With the weather turning a sunny corner, the social calendar packing out and a general public yearning for a long party season full of loud music, swinging soirees and delicious drinks, we’ve compiled a list of the five iconic cocktails (and how to make them) to serve you through spring.
Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz White rum, 1 oz Lime juice, 1/2 oz Simple syrup
Preparation: Pour all ingredients into shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain in chilled cocktail glass.
Served: Straight up; without ice
Standard Garnish: Half a lime slice
Drinkware: Cocktail glass
Best enjoyed: by the pool, winning in all linen.
Ingredients: 1/2 oz Vodka, 1/4 oz Lillet Blonde, 2 oz Gin
Preparation: Shake over ice until well chilled, then strain into a deep goblet and garnish with a thin slice of lemon peel.
Served: Straight up.
Garnish: Lemon peel
Glassware: Champagne coupe or a cocktail glass
Best enjoyed: at a cocktail bar, wearing a tuxedo or perfectly-fitted two-button Merino wool suit (it’s named after James Bond’s ill-fated love, after all).
Ingredients: 1 oz Cointreau, 1 oz Lime juice, 2 oz Tequila
Preparation: Rub the rim of the glass with a slice of lime to make the salt stick. Shake the other ingredients with ice, then carefully pour into the glass, making sure you don’t pour away any of the salt. Garnish and serve over ice.
Served: Poured over ice.
Garnish: Slice of Lime, salt on the rim.
Glassware: Margarita glass.
Best enjoyed: by a beach, wearing a deconstructed cotton or linen suit.
Ingredients: 3 parts vodka, 1 part lemon juice, six parts tomato juice, salt, pepper, Tabasco, Worcestershire Sauce, lemon.
Preparation: Add a few dashes of Worcestershire Sauce, Tabasco, salt and pepper into a highball glass, then pour all of the ingredients into a highball with ice cubes. Stir gently and garnish with celery stalk and a lemon wedge.
Served: Poured over ice.
Garnish: Celery stalk or a dill pickle spear.
Glassware: Highball glass.
Best enjoyed: the morning after a big night, with tailored chinos, an ironed shirt and dark, dark sunnies (to hide behind).
Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz Vodka, 1/6 oz Lime juice, 4 oz Ginger beer
Preparation: Combine vodka and ginger beer in a copper mug or a highball glass filled with ice. Add lime juice, stir gently and garnish with a lime slice.
Served: Poured over ice.
Glassware: Copper mug or highball glass.
Garnish: Lime slice.
Best enjoyed: At a loud, boisterous party that’s predicted to escalate, wearing a sports blazer and tailored wool or linen trousers.
